What is the ETA Scheme?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation Scheme (ETA) is being introduced in the UK. From 15 November 2023, some visitors will now be required to obtain this prior to their visit to the UK even if they are from a non-visa country. Nationals from non- visa countries previously were permitted to enter the UK without having to apply for a visit visa beforehand.
Those from countries that require a visa to visit will be required to make an application for entry clearance, as before.
You will not be required to obtain an ETA if you have a;
- British or Irish passport
- Permission to live, work or study in the UK
- Are required to obtain a visa to enter the UK even for visits less than 6 months
An ETA will be required also for transit through the UK.
How to apply for an ETA to enter the UK?
To apply for an ETA, visitors will need to fill out an application form online or via a mobile app. Applicants will need travel details, a valid biometric passport, an email address and a form of payment method e.g. debit card. At present the fee is £10. All travellers should seek to apply to obtain an ETA a few days prior to travelling as it can take up to 72 hours for approval to enter the country to be granted.
Always make an application through the Official UK Government Website.
Refusal of an ETA
The Immigration Rules list a number of reasons where an ETA must be refused. If you are refused a UK ETA then you will need to apply for a standard visitor visa.
At Clapham and Collinge, we can assist you in making this application, as well as any other Immigration matter. For more information, contact our dedicated Client Relations team on 01603 693510 or email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk.
